This article seeks to expand the current, predominantly socio-technical debate about content accessibility to a more pedagogically driven debate. The focus is on the nature of the term “open” in the academic context and the questions concerning open educational practices (OEP) in higher education. The article concludes with an outlook on OEP in higher education that balances scepticism and excitement.
