Administration along a university´s academic core business is mainly done by scientists in addition to their main tasks. Complexity of administration and management tasks however has grown considerably. Coordinating courses and programmes requires full-time-professionals, research becomes business and university management depends more and more on highly integrated data systems. This exerts pressure on universities and makes organisational development necessary. But it includes the chance for institutionalising “third space” professionally and powerfully between science and administration.
