The main focus of this paper is to describe and discuss options for research in the field of business and social sciences at universities of applied sciences. We demonstrate that research within this area typically addresses issues of (management) practice. We then distinguish between different types of investigation and discuss their suitability for developing an adequate profile of social and business research at universities of applied sciences. In particular, the relevance-based approach offers instructive and forward-thinking perspectives.
