In relation to and in competition with other research institutes, universities of applied sciences must establish their position as research locations. Using the example of a multiyear research project, this report shows the characteristics of such research in seven parts. Problematical situations are described, and the potential for development is elaborated. The report covers the establishment and maintenance of research teams, research publicity and competition for funds. In conclusion, this article calls for a specific research culture at universities of applied sciences, which could contribute to their identity.
