This paper addresses the central question of the role that university continuing education can play as a profiling element for Austrian universities. For this purpose, university continuing education’s principal elements and primary influencing factors are presented here. Based on the fundamental considerations of profiling, the necessary parameters are then shown from the point of view of university continuing education. Finally, the article deals with the classification of university continuing education on the basis of current developments around the strategy paper for the future of Austrian universities.
