Guidelines for authors

Three ways to become an author in the ZFHE

First: Due to your expertise in a field, you are invited by the publisher(s) of a specific issue to write a contribution. If you accept this invitation and your article is accepted after the peer-review process, you are a ZFHE author.

Second: You submit a complete contribution after a ZFHE Call for Papers. If the publishers deem it appropriate and significant, they will forward it to two reviewers. If your contribution is positively reviewed, you are a ZFHE author.

Third: You submit your article as a free contribution to the ZFHE. If it meets the thematic criteria of one of the announced themes, it will be forwarded to the responsible editor(s). If this is not the case, the contribution will proceed directly to the review process. If it is positively reviewed, it can be published in the next issue of the ZFHE or - based on the decision of the Editorial Board - become the starting point for a new theme.

Checklist for submissions

Authors are asked to submit contributions in compliance with the following guidelines (contributions that do not meet these guidelines will be rejected):

  1. Upload the text in Microsoft Word (.doc), Office Open XML (.docx), Open Document Text (.odt) or Plain Text (.txt) format. Ideally, you should use our current document templates (ZFHE 19/4; ZFHE 20/SH-KI; ZFHE 20/1).
  2. Complete contributions are first submitted in anonymized form with all indications or hints regarding the identity of the author(s) removed (please check the file properties as well!). As part of the submission of the complete contribution, an abstract (i.e. summary at the beginning of the article) must be added, in addition to the metadata (author(s), title). Upon positive assessment by the reviewers, the final (and potentially revised) version with all information about the author(s) must be submitted.
  3. References in both the text and the bibliography must comply with APA standard; whenever possible, URLs should be included in the bibliography.
  4. Gender-appropriate language must be employed.
  5. The review guidelines have been read, understood and acknowledged.
  6. Submitted texts must not have been published or made available on the internet. Accepted contributions that have not yet been published in the ZFHE must be referred to as "accepted/in print".

Creative Commons Lizenzvertrag

In general, the author of each contribution will own the exploitation rights. If an author submits an article for publication to the ZFHE, he or she transfers the rights of use of the respective contribution to the ZFHE; this applies even if no written contract is available because copyright contracts may be concluded orally or by implication.

All authors who wish to publish in the ZFHE agree to the following provisions:

  • a. The author(s) retain copyright and give permission to the ZFHE to publish the contribution under the https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.en, which permits others to use the publication as long as the authors are appropriately cited.
  • b. The author(s) may conclude additional contracts for the non-exclusive dissemination of  the version published in the ZFHE, citing the publication in the ZFHE.
  • c. Secondary publication of texts published in the ZFHE is encouraged, but not parallel publication during the submission process.
  • d. The editors of each issue also assume authorship of that particular issue.
