While universities do understand systematic and goal-oriented formation of students as one of their core functions, competency development of academic staff seems to remain unsystematic and, in many cases, rather coincidental than need orientated. Data from an online survey including N=189 respondents are used to outline a job profile of young academic staff members with tasks in research and/or teaching. This profile is being compared to the individual time budget used for professional development and other forms of competency development. Competency development in the field of management & leadership and teaching & presentation is dramatically underrepresented. Against this background, recommendations for future integration of competency development at the “workplace university” are made.
