The digital turn can be seen as a general trend of “modernization” that all universities have to address in a similar manner. That is, although universities are addressing this issue at different speeds, similar solutions will eventually emerge in most institutions. On the other hand, the digital turn can also be seen as an opportunity for a university to gain a competitive edge. The paper addresses the implications of these two viewpoints for universities and how various stakeholders value these two approaches. In several workshops, the two options were discussed with vice-presidents, members of university boards and stakeholders in politics and the administration. This article highlights key considerations and insights gained form these workshops.
