Research-based learning and service learning: Two versions of problem-based learning

As concepts for university didactics, research-based learning and service learning are becoming increasingly important in the context of the Bologna reform. Although, they are both based on the basic didactic principles of problem-based learning, the implementation may vary significantly. The present paper discusses the similarities and differences of the two concepts, illustrates the corresponding learning and teaching practices at the universities in Leipzig and Graz, and describes open research questions concerning the concepts' further developement.
