The goal of this self-directed online course on academic literacy is to offer a sustainable training that goes beyond the general ability to study successfully. Instead, the course prepares participants for academic writing and reading in their selected college major. Participants also learn how to adapt their literacy competences to the needs of their targeted professional fields. This article describes the course content and course design in detail. The coursework includes self-determined work on tasks on the e-learning platform within the first two semesters of college, reflective practice in the personal e-portfolio, and the subsequent voluntary use of the coursework for ongoing disciplinary study and writing final theses. Based on the experience using the course to date, the strengths and risks involved in the process of creating consistency in the future practice of the course are discussed here.
