Writing Fellow programs have been around since the 1980s; as part of the outreach or WAC / WID Program of many US American writing centers, they have served as successful tools for supporting the development of students' disciplinary writing skills and promoting the idea of what undergraduates can accomplish. In the wake of the expansion of the German Writing Center movement, the Writing Fellow program has been 'imported' and adapted to our higher education system. This paper first provides an overview of the program's goals and effects on the teaching and learning of academic writing, and then goes on to describe the conditions under which Writing Centers can start introducing the program at their own institution.
