At six Bavarian universities, activating teaching methods such as Peer Instruction (PI), Just-in-Time-Teaching (JiTT) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) were established to promote understanding and to minimize high dropout rates in the STEM subjects. In the current study, a total of 5,465 students were questioned over 5 semesters using standardized questionaires. Although PBL is equivalent to other activating teaching methods, it is difficult to implement with the current lack of structural support from the universities.
