Main Article Content

The article gives an overview about the collaboration between the College of Teacher Education in Graz and the School Biology Center (SBZ), an out-of-class learning location. The first part describes the project named SUN:ST, a Styrian network doing lessons in science. The second part discusses the techniques and strategies of the constructivist action-oriented hands on learning experience in an out-of-school environment at SBZ. The third part shows the specific methods of doing the evaluation in the field. Finally the results are discussed and fruitful solutions to some problems of the debate are given. Students, researchers and others with an interest in this approach will find the collection highly informative, e.g. in allowing them to estimate the opportunities and risks associated with the first hand experience method.
