Students are reluctant to confront the challenge of academic writing for a number of reasons. Our "Dangerous Writing Seminar" is designed to counter these negative emotions with the aid of creative writing exercises. As students engage with unfamiliar writing assignments, they discover that playing with words can be fun and, as a consequence, develop greater self-confidence as writers. Our hypothesis is that students will thereby acquire the intrinsic motivation needed to pursue academic writing throughout the rest of their study program.
