Problem-based, competence-oriented examination requires all parties concerned to change their focus from goals to competences. Drawing on experience from the ‘Problem-based Learning’ project, this paper illustrates a procedure for developing a competence-oriented examination system, the related examination tools, the relevant professional abilities, a method for assessing these, and a system for providing feedback on learning success to support the learning process. The implementation requires specific training of development and assessment personnel, as well as practice. If they are well trained and supported, the majority of teachers and students appreciate these forms of examination and achieve good results.
