In order to introduce students to disciplinary thinking, performance and writing at an early stage, the Department of German Studies at Bielefeld University created a writing-oriented first year of study. To ensure that students have the opportunity to deepen their literary competencies throughout their studies, the department is now exploring ways to adapt the Writing Enriched Curriculum (WEC) model of the University of Minnesota for a process of writing-oriented curriculum design. This article describes both the teaching concept of the first year of German Studies and the WEC model, which facilitates a department-based curriculum development process.
