This paper presents the results of three research projects on student academic writing at the university. The first two projects investigated student writing in three social science disciplines, and the third project then translated the results of the first two projects into a writing course for students. This eventually led to the development of a pedagogical approach to writing which facilitates the teaching of both discipline-specific and general academic writing fundamentals to students of different disciplines in one course program.
