University teachers in technical subjects often try to leave traditional lectures behind in order to introduce competence-oriented teaching and learning, even if their groups are very large. Thus, they are looking for methods that involve the students in learning activities throughout the whole semester, so that they can manage the assessment successfully. This paper deals with the transformation of a materials science lecture for about 100 students into a problem-based-learning class using the jigsaw method. Clearly expressed learning outcomes and a competence-based assessment helped to improve the students’ performance significantly.
