This paper contributes to the discussion on effective teaching strategies using the problem-based learning (PBL) approach. Based on a concrete example from the field of life sciences (i.e. tissue engineering), challenges in the implementation phase of a PBL module are illustrated. The paper then goes on to present the current concept of the module, the optimization measures taken during the module's ongoing development, and the effectiveness of these measures from the student perspective.
