This paper discusses the design of authentic, competence-oriented online examinations that go beyond established examination task paradigms. Online examination environments that enable selective access to digital resources, such as professional software, files, networks or the Internet, are presented. Based on didactical considerations and examples from online examination practice at ETH Zurich, this paper shows how the availability of such computer-based resources can facilitate the design of authentic, competence-oriented examination tasks – or make them possible in the first place – and thus open doors to entirely new opportunities in examination design.
