In Northrhine Westfalia, initial teacher education programmes consist of a bachelor's and a master's phase, including student teaching phases at school and the use of a portfolio. The portfolio helps future teachers to develop professional competences via systematic documentation and reflection on observations and experiences in the educational field. AIMs, the Paderborn portfolio, is one example of this didactic approach of guiding and supporting students' reflection processes. This article focusses on the concept and execution of AIMs by using the first phase of teaching practice, the Orientierungspraktikum (orientation internship), as an example.
