What is the distinctive role of studies on professional practice in teacher education programs? In this article, we propose viewing teacher education and studies on professional practice as referring to two different practices: the practices of science in the related disciplines and the practices of the profession in the field. The two practices operate in their relevant modes, but must also merge in the professional actions of individual teachers. This requires a "third space" as a new approach for professionalization within studies on professional practice.
