Universities need to accommodate both disciplinary epistemic cultures and the specific requirements of the labor market. Between these extremes, they establish study programmes on artistic research, which focus on both individualized learning environments and subjective, reflected artistic practices. However, neither universities nor art schools offer a consistently research-based education. Hence, this paper examines such study programmes from an educational perspective. Based on a qualitative analysis of 13 programmes from German-speaking universities, the paper explores how the basic concepts of artistic research can be transferred to the concept of research-based learning, and then goes on to discuss the implementation of artistic research at the undergraduate level.
