Artistic research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz - An experience-based report

Since 2009, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz has been offering a "Dr.art." degree. As the first university of arts within the German-speaking region to offer such a degree in the field of music, the KUG is pioneering the development of this branch of studies. Beyond describing the implementation of this branch of studies into the University's curricula, this text describes the challenges and experiences related to this new form of artistic research. In addition, the paper discusses the most important insights gained from three years of experience, as well as possible directions for the future. Finally, the paper covers some basic considerations concerning the positioning of artistic research within current academic activities.
