This paper analyzes the transition process from high school to university with regard to the field of historical studies. It presents the results of empirical surveys concerning the assumptions and expectations with which high school graduates enter their first history classes. The paper also discusses how new students can be guided towards a conceptual change, which will allow them to develop and adopt an academic perspective.
