The author believes that university data centers and information services have a high potential to expand and to provide innovative services in their non-academic environments. The rapidly growing demand within society for trustworthy IT services could be fulfilled. At the same time, university and campus life could receive valuable stimulation. This paper provides a summary of the scientific discussion concerning this topic as well as an overview of the services university data centers typically offer, and then proposes a future scenario. Furthermore, the paper describes how such a scenario could be implemented and critically discusses its meaning and effect.
