The support that universities provide students during their initial study phase must match the needs of a heterogeneous student body (in terms of study skills as well as sociodemographic and motivational characteristics) and must fulfill both subject-specific and individual requirements. This paper shows the relationship between various characteristics of psychology students and the ways in which such students use the support offered by universities during their first semester. The paper also discusses the conditions for applying the results to other fields of study, as well as the challenges and opportunities that arise for the development and implementation of first-year support in higher education.
