Mathematical competence includes both using and understanding mathematical concepts. Understanding is often not in the foreground of traditional lectures. Such courses should be adapted in order to make students use and understand mathematics. This paper describes how the authors incorporated feedback and assessment methods (e.g. the "one-minute paper", self-learning with online-assessment and online-feedback, and peer-instruction using clickers) into their traditional lectures. Using these methods, the students take an active part in the lecture and improve their understanding. The authors use these methods on a regular basis during their courses and wish to share their experiences, including initial evaluation results.
