The first-year engineering curriculum, and mathematics in particular, presents a huge barrier for a large group of students. At the Mathematics department of Ruhr-University Bochum, a set of interventions was developed and evaluated within the programme MP2 – Mathe/Plus/Praxis with the objective of reducing failure rates in early exams. This paper describes the basic principles of the implementation of both sub-programmes MathePlus and MathePraxis, as well as the results of the evaluations and their implications for future developments.
