The curricular reform process in Innsbruck, Austria, was initiated by a liberal federal law and the altered expectations of society towards the medical profession in general. Large innovations were welcomed by the faculty and led to the planning of an ambitious new medical curriculum. Here, the process of recruitment of the participants in the reform and of the selection of goals and objectives, as well as the reform ?s implementation under changing basic conditions are discussed. Strengths and weaknesses with respect to context, scope and complexity, and process of the reform are analysed in comparison with factors for a successful curricular change, as defined by BLAND et al.
