The functions of video are currently an important topic in discussions about teaching and learning in a higher education setting, not the least because of the use of video in certain relatively novel didactical scenarios, such as Massice Open Online Courses (MOOCs) or the Inverted Classroom Method. This article first presents a theoretical approach to the core topic and then provides a didactical framework in which it might be integrated. The case study of Video Support Services at the University of Düsseldorf is then described and critically discussed. Some conclusions are drawn with regard to the function of central media departments and other supporting units.
