This paper discusses the criteria for designing instructional films that can be employed in the training of communication skills. Such films should be designed in order to simultaneously meet the requirements of (i) theoretical principles or models and (ii) a realistic presentation of a relevant communication situation. In addition, the technical realisation should match current viewing habits. With regard to these topics, this paper draws on experiences with producing instructional films related to doctor-patient and teacher-parent communication in the ProfKom project to provide systematic advice for creating instructional films.
