The goal of this paper is to provide a solid theoretical background on the use of digital media in higher education by providing information of didactic interest and presenting conclusions about the challenges and opportunities associated with new learning arrangements. Digital media facilitate individual learning processes. Furthermore, they provide freedom in choosing learning topics. New ways of learning are being integrated in formal learning settings and are thereby supporting self-regulated learning and competency in dealing with new technologies. This brings a need for a profound change in education culture, which would reduce existing barriers and foster a new learning and teaching culture.
