This paper analyses the facets and effects of school-like designs in modularised study programmes. It provides information about formal and technical options for regaining certain degrees of freedom, which enables students to choose content or competence training based on their individual interests. Furthermore, it may improve individual mobility between different academic institutions. In addition, lecturers could use free spaces for many purposes, such as to implement innovative didactic designs or to offer students the opportunity to participate in research activities. However, freedom in studying is a challenge for the institutions, which must find an appropriate balance between freedom and curriculum.
