We developed a training program to help students in their first semester at university. Four weeks before the start of the term, students were trained in learning strategies. This empirical study investigates the effects of a tutor-based strategy training on student use of learning strategies. During the camp, students (n=207) were trained in learning strategies. A smaller number of students received an ongoing training throughout the semester. The results were disappointing at the start of the term, with negative effects on students’ use of learning strategies. The smaller group of students who continued with the training during the semester showed significantly better results.
