The text describes the measurement of teaching orientations using an open- response format. Teachers (n = 71) and students (n = 276) from the University of Münster were asked to complete the following sentence: “For good teaching it is important that...“. Answers were analysed using qualitative content analysis (MAYRING, 2010) in the context of KEMBER’s (1997) model of teaching conceptions. The results show that student orientations are markedly more teacher-focused than the orientations of the teachers themselves. Moreover, the student sample showed differences between disciplines. The discussion addresses the applicability of an open survey about teaching orientations and compares the current results with previous findings obtained by different methods.
