The aim of the present research project was to identify the distinguishing characteristics of e-learning adopters on an academic teaching staff. An online survey of teaching staff members at higher education institutions in Saxony was used to investigate adopter characteristics. Using multivariate methods of data analysis, four types of e-learning adopters were identified and characterized in terms of their motivations, needs and attitudes towards e-learning innovations. These types are explorers, research-oriented adopters, teaching-oriented adopters and networkers. The results explain different reaction patterns to e-learning innovation and provide clues for the design of intervention strategies to introduce innovations in academic teaching.
