Main Article Content

This article presents a model of relevant teaching competencies and attitudes from the perspective of teachers at the Medical University of Vienna. Teachers were asked which competencies and attitudes they thought were important for teaching. Using content analysis, the resulting statements were grouped into three competence categories and two attitude categories. Statements about the teaching context were also considered. In addition, the teachers’ perspectives were compared to those of both experts in the field of teaching and students, and the similarities and differences were evaluated. The result is an integrated “puzzle model”, which emphasizes that teaching is a combination of context, teacher competencies and teacher attitudes. Like a puzzle, these pieces must be fit together to form the complete picture of excellent teaching.
