In the context of implementing quality management in German higher education institutions, process-oriented approaches are receiving more and more consideration. There is, however, no agreement on what can be understood as process-oriented. Approaches range from process optimization projects to process quality in the context of institutional accreditation (Systemakkreditierung) or quality management systems based on documentation. Taking into account the origins of quality management approaches commonly accepted in the business sector, this article’s intention is to reflect on the adaptability of this concept to higher education institutions. Using an organizational theory perspective, the potential usefulness of process-oriented quality management in higher education institutions is evaluated.
