This article examines the possibilities for improving the preliminary and initial study phases to prevent early drop-outs. Possible objectives, indicators, instruments and measures are presented and examined in the context of the current state of quality management. Based on a survey of all of the schools and departments of mechanical and electrical engineering in Germany, as well as on additional case studies, this article offers both an overview of current quality management activities and suggestions for enhancing existing systems.
