Based on an evaluation of a funding programme for R&D projects in engineering, the present study examines the self-rated competency gains pertaining to “research “ and “management” of young (or future) engineers involved in the project. Although, in general, all groups profited from the involvement in the project, different groups showed different patterns of gains. For masters-level students, there were differences between those who had contact with companies and those who did not. This paper discusses the results of the evaluation and suggests some possible implications for both future research and higher education.
