Regarding the drastic changes of the academic requirements that are put on nowadays students due to the Bologna reforms, psycho-social and academic support for students become more and more important to prevent student drop-out and to support successful learning. Standardized coaching is an effective approach to develop general student competencies offering an environment that sensitively but sustainably raises students’ self management-competencies independently from university programs or educational pre-qualifications. This article does not only argue fundamental success factors for standardized coaching, but widens the view for an innovative approach to coaching: the assignment of students as layman-coaches.
