This article first defines the crucial features of research-based learning by describing its goals and constitutive criteria. The implementation of research-based learning at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) requires structural measures from the university management – an aspect that is discussed in greater detail in the second chapter. The RUB Professional Developement Office has adopted this strategy and conducted various projects on research-based learning (e.g. in the field of continuing education), two of which are described in chapter three. The conclusion focuses on the pivotal environmental conditions of university teaching that impact the generation of a new learning culture based on research-based learning.
