This article focuses on the little-known connection between forms of learning in learning workshops (Lernwerkstätten) and forms of learning through play. This connection is presented as a promising way to establish a new form of self-directed learning at universities. The general and pedagogical requirements for establishing a playful research culture are discussed based on the example of the seminar praxis of the “Lernwerkstatt SPIEL”.
