This paper presents the findings of a study on the cooperation between higher education institutions (HEIs) and businesses (UBC) across Europe. The study was conducted in 2011 for the EC. It covered all of the registered European HEIs in 33 countries and used a sample of 6,280 HEI representatives. UBC is influenced by a number of factors, including the perception of the benefits resulting from UBC as well as barriers to and drivers of UBC. Moreover, situational factors also influence the extent of UBC. UBC can be increased by focussing on appropriate strategies, structures, approaches, operational activities and framework conditions. This paper introduces a model that outlines the relationship between these different elements within the UBC ecosystem and presents some detailed results for universities of applied sciences in Europe.
