Young academics at Swiss universities of applied sciences are confronted with two central challenges: (1) the successful completion of the dissertation and (2) the development and pursuit of professional objectives for which the scientific acivities in applied research are suitable. This article briefly describes the special characteristics of universities of applied sciences with respect to junior scientific staff and outlines the specific problems for such personnel in terms of recruitment, career advancement and professional aims. Finally, the paper presents two approaches that may offer successful means for meeting these challenges.
