The concept of Education Design assumes that physical and virtual space are equally important for the processes of learning and focuses on multi-purpose learning environments for learning and knowledge building. As the digital infrastructure evolves, it is expected that the learning and teaching culture will also be fundamentally rearranged. In order to react to these changes, flexible core concepts for adjustable spaces for the new learning culture must be developed, and patterns for different learning settings need to be designed. However, as technology gains importance, architecture often seems to take the backseat, despite that fact that for learning and knowledge building and the changing demands, it seems particularly crucial to allow technology and architecture limitless flexibility. Therefore, spaces defined for learning should be understood – like media – as an equal, non-human “actor” in an network process called Bildung*.
