Increasing professionalism in academia is leading to ever-growing challenges for the academic staff. In order to meet the demands of multiple roles, the professional development of personal competencies is becoming indispensable. Using the example of the LMU Center for Leadership and People Management, this article highlights the growing importance of professional personal development of academic staff for meeting new challenges and fostering academic performance, innovation and organizational development. Furthermore, the implications for the implementation of personnel development programs at other universities are discussed.
