The process of introducing graded study programmes and degrees in accordance with the Bologna Declaration has led to current discussions and protests about the student workload in Germany. With this in mind, the goal of the joint research project “ZEITLast” at Ilmenau University of Technology is to investigate the actual student workload of three engineering bachelor’s degrees. One key finding is that students do not spend as much time on studying and self-studies as required in the Bologna Declaration. In order to achieve sustainable, continuous learning, the project team has developed and introduced an intervention of structure, curriculum and didactics.
