This article analyses and documents the systematic development, experimental implementation and outcome-based evaluation of Research-based Learning as an educational principle in Higher Education. The authors applied this approach to Industrial Project Management, a module of Engineering Education at TU Dortmund University. The original momentum for the described reserach activity is the authors’ motivation to teach Project Management in a format which aims at technical and social competences as learning outcomes, and at the same time provides active learning which does not only support learning success but is also compatible with current project management practice. Based on the evaluation results, impact and first steps for improvement of the educational conception are discussed.
